Re: Bending 5052 .080" aluminum sheet with a bending brake? Ya i admit iv never used a brake before, and im not sure how those height ratings are measured. My plan is to bend the bottom and two sides to the box in one sheet, then cut two separate sheets to complete the other two sides to the box.
I have a piece of 8.5" wide, 3/16" thick 5052 Aluminium that needs several bends. The largest angle is only 40 degrees. (part gets bent from 180 degrees to 140 degrees) I just tried this on a small sheet metal type brake but it was trying to pry open the brake.
I would be very careful trying to bend 6061 it will crack & break at the bend, 5052 is used mostly for bending for that reason, 6061 is better for machining. In the motorcycle industries we use 6061 because it machines well and it can be polished almost to a chrome like finish. like all metals after you cut it for awhile you will used to it.
Using the thickness I wish to work with, which will be .025", which aluminum alloy will bend 90* and stay bent with little springback? The following alloys are all available in my chosen thickness of sheet stock. 2024 - T3 5052 - H32 6061 - T6 My parts will be stamped to roughly 1/2" X 3/4" and then formed in a series of stations.
